Almost universally, students have shared that they want respectful relationships with their teachers. They have expressed how important it is for their teachers to believe in them and to understand them as whole people, not just as academic learners.
Students have also expressed that they want to feel like administrators respect them. To them, respect means both relational compassion and also understanding of their upbringing and racial and ethnic backgrounds.
“At times, our school shuts us down without listening to us. I feel like some adults may view us as less than because we’re so young. They have an opportunity to make things better for us, but they refuse to listen to our concerns.” —Heba
“Effective communication is essential for a functional school, and it is the responsibility of the administration to ensure that everyone is kept informed about school issues, events, and policies. By doing so, they can create a more welcoming environment for students and staff.” — Alex
“Because of the dissatisfaction with administration and the lack of genuine listening and understanding, the weight of solving community problems has fallen onto BIPOC students. But it shouldn’t just be on us. We need support from all corners of our school – especially administration.” — Alexis

“I think that the staff doesn’t represent the students culturally. If we’re the most diverse school in [town], why don’t my teachers look like me? Why don’t I feel represented? Especially the admin. Many students have stated that they benefit from programs at school where they can form strong relationships with adults who support their mental health and social emotional needs, as well as offer additional academic support.
“Communication with guidance counselors is also an issue … Students often have their classroom changed without notification, causing a lot of issues for students. If students ask guidance counselors about the change, they don’t have any information about why the change was made. … [It} also extends to college and career planning. Students are not given enough support when it comes to navigating the college application process or exploring career options. We are not told how to sign up for our SATs. We are not told what we need to graduate, or how many credits we need.” — Alex

Students have described how high staff turnover can lead to a lack of consistency and stability in the school. Teacher absenteeism is a related issue in that several students have shared they do not learn effectively from repeat substitutes.

Neishaly: My instructional strategies teacher is different
“My instructional strategies teacher is different … He understands that we are young adults who are growing up. He remembers what it was like to be a young person. He talks to us about our life, he gets to know us and he always asks what we need or how he can help. He understands that we have other classes and other things that we have to make a priority.” — Neishaly
Heba: It was cool to see students and teachers decide to come together
“Our school had an attendance policy called the “E” policy that would replace your grade with an “E” as a result of three unexcused absences. We thought it was really unfair, because even if you tried hard, you would be punished for things that were sometimes out of your control. Students decided to try and protest to fix the “E” policy, and some teachers came with students to fix it because they saw that it was really unfair. It was cool to see students and teachers decide to come together, because bad policies affect teachers, too. We were like a team. It was just nice to see that we can all come together.” — Heba
